Nationalism vs Patriotism

This activity taught students to investigate the difference between the key terms of 'nationalism' and 'patriotism'. They looked at associated terms such as 'pride', 'competition' and 'loyalty'.

Students had the opportunity to consider their own countries values and whether the nation they live in is more patriotic or nationalistic. Students also reflected upon whether it was acceptable to show nationalism in any circumstances and why.

Nationalism vs Patriotism Student Survey Results

Students taking part in the nationalism and patriotism activity were asked to complete the same survey before and after learning took place.

The results show that the position of the students in terms of how they regard the terms 'nationalism' and 'patriotism' changed as nationalism was viewed slightly more negatively and patriotism seen more positively.

The students were also asked which words like 'loyalty' and 'allegiance' were related to nationalism and patriotism. Finally, students submitted responses to say whether they believed when it was acceptable and unacceptable to show nationalism and whether they though their own country was more patriotic or nationalistic, with several quotes from the students shown in the presentation slides.

Nationalism vs Patriotism Presentation

The presentation below was shown to tutor groups in Archbishop Ilsley Catholic School.

Students thought about the differences between nationalism and patriotism in their form group sessions, being prompting to think independently about the issues before discussing in a pair and then sharing across a whole class discussion. Some of the work completed in the sessions can be seen on the right.
